Bio

Balthazar de Andrade (b. 1987) is a French-Brazilian photographer whose work explores the tension between documentary reality and the surreal. Currently based in Paris, his perspective is shaped by a nomadic history, having spent formative years living and working in Rio de Janeiro and Dublin.

Since beginning his practice in 2013, de Andrade has developed an expansive portfolio that traverses street photography, portraiture, and the documentation of cultural and folk traditions. His work is characterized by a curiosity for "the image not immediately understood," seeking out moments where the ordinary shifts into the unexpected. Whether documenting protests or quiet vignettes of life in India and Brazil, his lens prioritizes a sense of place and the human stories found within it.

De Andrade’s work has been featured in collective exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro, at the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) and at the Biblioteca Parque Estadual, during the FotoRio festival.
